Lonely and elderly: Mansfield's only African and Caribbean centre may close

Reya El-Salahi

Available for over a year

The only community centre providing specialist services for Mansfield's elderly African and Caribbean communities is facing closure. It comes after a speech from Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt last month highlighting the chronic loneliness of elderly people in this UK, which he called a "national shame"., The Mansfield Family Life Centre was set up in 1997 to offer a place for over 65s to socialise, receive support and advice. But the organisation may have to close its doors in the New Year after its county council funding was cut by 50%. Speaking to 麻豆社 Radio Nottingham's Reya El-Salahi, the group's development officer Marlon Imemshah, says elderly people living in the area will be left completely isolated if the centre has to close.
