Tonbridge School sent more than 2,000 of its former pupils to war. Four hundred and fifteen never came home. The loss and sacrifice of World War One is still keenly felt in the classrooms and corridors of the school, where the names of the fallen will be remembered in special assemblies throughout this centenary year and beyond. Some of that sacrifice has now been documented in a new book written by retired Second Master, David Walsh. The strain of leading the school through wartime forced headmaster Charles Lowry into an early grave. His portrait and a plaque to commemorate Major Eric Dougall, Tonbridge School’s solitary Victoria Cross winner, are constant reminders to today’s staff and pupils.
