The Parish Church of St John the Evangelist in Goole is home to a rare stained glass window that tells the story of a short lived military career during WW1. The soldier depicted in the window is of Lieutenant Ernest Conway Lansdale of the Royal Flying Corps. Ernest Consway Landsdale was born in Goole in 1895, where his family ran a successful ale, stout and mineral water bottling business on Carlisle Street near their family home on Burlington Cresent. His Parents were married at the Parish Church and his great-grandfather worked there as church warden. At a cost of £200 to the family the window was unveiled in 1923. Ernest crash landed behind enemy lines after being shot down by Manfred von Richthofen, otherwise known as fighter pilot The Red Baron, on 30 September 1916. It was then reported that Lieutenant Lansdale had died in December 1916 as a prisoner of war in Germany aged just 21.
