Betting shop curbs: Seven bookmakers on one block

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

People in Bradford, where a number of bookmakers are clustered, give their views on plans to give local authorities more power to reduce the number of outlets. The government has announced plans for stronger powers for councils in England to scrutinise planning permission for bookmakers. Betting shops currently sit in the same building usage category as banks and estate agents, meaning no planning permission is needed to open one. The change will allow local authorities to analyse proposals. This clip is from Drive on Wednesday 30 April 2014.
