A prototype percussion shaker has been developed that converts kinetic energy into to electricity. The aim is to help children in rural parts of Africa and other parts of the developing world gain access to a few hours of extra light to do their homework or charge their phones. Musician Sudha Kheterpal is leading the project. (Photo: One of the Kenyan rural communities which has tested out the idea.)
