Abernant is a small community in Alabama. In contrast to its namesake in Wales, tornado activity in the area is 231% greater than the overall US average. In 1998, a tornado near Abernant claimed the lives of 32 people and caused $200,000 worth of damage. Abernant is the name of two villages in Carmarthenshire and Powys. A third coal mining village in Rhondda Cynon Taf was home to the Abernant Ironworks and suffered severe flooding in 1912. Abernant colliery is pictured here, courtesy of Rhondda Cynon Taf council. Abernant is a combination of the words aber (estuary) and nant (stream) and means 'mouth of the brook.' Many place names in Wales feature both these elements – Aberystwyth, Abergele, Nantgarw, and Nant-y-glo.
