Bryn Mawr, meaning large hill in Welsh, is a neighbourhood in Seattle, Washington, as well as the name of other villages in North America. Bryn Mawr is also a prestigious women's college in Pennsylvania, and the name of the area surrounding it. The small market town of Bryn Mawr in south Wales grew in the 19th century around Bryn Mawr farm, and expanded further with the development of the Nantyglo Ironworks. The settlement was originally known as Gwaun yr Helygen (willow marsh) after the neighbouring moor.
