World War One centenary: Return to Leuven

World Update

Available for over a year

In 1914, Leuven was a medieval city on the road to Brussels, with a famous university and library. But on 25 August that was to change forever when German forces, fighting their way through neutral Belgium, razed the city to the ground. Civilians were summarily executed, and priceless medieval books were destroyed. So what is the legacy of what many regard as one of the worst atrocities of World War One? Dan went there to find out.
