Cloutsham Street, Northampton: The Cobblers’ Tales

World War One At Home

Available for over a year

Cloutsham Street is like many others in the Mounts area of Northampton. The rows of Victorian terraced houses were once filled with shoemakers, who worked in the factories that surrounded them. But World War One made this a remarkable street in terms of sacrifice. Nineteen men from Cloutsham Street were killed in the fighting, all of them from the shoe industry. Their stories tell the wider tale of the Great War. They fought and died not just on the Western Front, but as far afield as Gaza and Greece. Local historian David Parish uncovered the scale of Cloutsham Street’s loss and has researched the men’s stories, ensuring they will not be forgotten. Location: Cloutsham Street, Northampton NN1
