The Welsh NHS risks bankruptcy unless the problem of morbid obesity is tackled, a leading weight loss surgeon has said. Jonathan Barry, one of only two bariatric surgeons in Wales, said giving more surgery would prevent the cost of treating complications caused by secondary diseases and surgery from elsewhere. Zac Smith, 40, from the Vale of Glamorgan, said he had been denied NHS surgery, despite weighing 50 stone and having a BMI of 87.5. He spent £9000 on gastric sleeve and excess skin removal surgery in India but complications meant he had to return to the NHS in Wales, something Dr Barry said was "not unusual". The Welsh government said they would continue to tackle obesity through education as complications from bariatric surgery meant it should only be used as "a last resort".
