Prime minister Tom Thabane on Lesotho's coup

Newshour

Available for over a year

The Southern African kingdom of Lesotho has had a turbulent political history since independence in 1966. Entirely surrounded by South Africa, Lesotho is "ultra-poor" according to the UN. It has one of the highest rates of HIV infection in the world, while struggles for power between political parties, army factions and the royal family have resulted in numerous coups and mutinies, as well as military intervention by South Africa. The prime minister, Tom Thabane, has headed a shaky coalition government since 2012. On the day that Lesotho's army staged a coup which ousted him, Mr.Thabane spoke to Newshour from neighbouring South Africa. (Photo: AP)
