5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

A scientific breakthrough could mean the end of daily insulin injections for thousands of type 1 diabetes sufferers. The condition affects around 400,000 people in Britain, including 30,000 children, making it the most common form of childhood diabetes. People diagnosed with diabetes currently control the condition with daily injections of insulin. Researchers at Harvard University say a trial involving using human stem cells transplanted into mice has proven 鈥渧ery promising鈥 with a trial on humans possible within a few years. 麻豆社 correspondent Ben Geoghegan reports on the breakthrough, thought by experts to be 鈥渁s big a game changer for diabetics as antibiotics were for infectious diseases鈥.
