George Africanus: Blue plaque to honour black entrepreneur

Reya El-Salahi

Available for over a year

A blue plaque has been erected in Nottingham to commemorate the life of a west African born slave who became Nottingham's first successful black businessman. George Africanus set up an employment agency and worked to improve the lives of black people in Nottingham in the 19th century. Norma Gregory organised the unveiling of the plaque - the first erected to a black person in Nottingham - outside a pub in Victoria Street, which stands on the site where George Africanus lived and worked. In this clip, hear a flavour of the ceremony.
