Whilst the Western Front is home to the vast majority of World War One cemeteries, there are war graves in every municipal cemetery in London. Lambeth Cemetery in Tooting, south-west London, has more than 200 Commonwealth burials from World War One. The stories associated with those burials give an insight into just how varied life in uniform was. The burials include Nellie Evans and Rose Neal who served in the Women’s Royal Air Force, Harry Dean who enlisted in the Royal Navy aged 12 and was killed by a mine in the English Channel, and Charles Newark who died of influenza just days before the end of the war.
