It has been 70 years since the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp, and survivor Renee Firestone says she still cannot believe she made it out alive. Renee, now 90 and living in California, was 15 when the camp was liberated, but was out on a “death march” at the time. She was not freed from Nazi capture until the end of the war. “How did I survive? I don’t remember. I don’t believe anyone can survive that,” she said. “I was sure I was going to die along the way.” She described how Nazi doctor Josef Mengele would “select girls at roll call” who were sick or weak, to be "eliminated". “We called him the angel of death. He selected people every single day… Every day we were less and less,” she said. Auschwitz was the largest camp created by the Germans, and more than a million people – the vast majority of them Jews – were killed there.
