MS sufferer: 'I was down to 22p'

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

鈥淚 was down to 22p鈥 says former accountant Penny Tyas. Penny was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2013. It took around 6 months for her to receive any money and at one point she and her son were surviving on food bank parcels. She was "one of the first people to apply for PIP" (personal independence payment) but before receiving the money had already "gone bankrupt, been evicted" and had lost her job. The service is intended to provide financial support for disabled people who face the biggest challenges to remain independent, but has already been labelled by MPs as a 鈥渇iasco鈥 following significant delays in processing people鈥檚 claims. This clip is originally from 5 live Daily on January 28 2015.
