The life of Paul Robeson on stage

Devon Daley

Available for over a year

The life of Paul Robeson has been the subject of a play at the Buxton Pavillion Arts Centre. As well as being a famous actor and singer, Paul Robeson was a political activist and played a huge role in the civil rights movement in America. However, he became too radical for the establishment and was at one time branded a traitor to his country. When the play first appeared in the United States it received a lot of accolades for its representation of Robeson's life. In this extract 麻豆社 Radio Derby's Devon Daley speaks to actor Tayo Aluko who plays the part of Paul Robeson and asks why Robeson was such an important campaigner. * The photo shows Paul Robeson making his first television appearance since WWII on a special edition of Picture Page, this edition celebrated the Post Office announcement of the sale of 100,000 television licences. The photo was taken in 1949.
