Rise in asylum seekers facing destitution in the UK

Sunday night with Nikki Tapper

Available for over a year

There has been a rapid increase in the number of refugees and asylum seekers facing destitution in the UK, where they suffer poverty so extreme that they lack the means to provide for themselves and their family. It is a situation that thousands find themselves in when they come to the UK. Asylum seekers often have to wait months or years for the outcome of their asylum claim, and during this time they aren't allowed to work and are often forced to survive on handouts. This is what happened to Paulette Mengnjo when she arrived from Cameroon after having to flee for her life. In this extract she speaks to 麻豆社 Wm's Joe Aldred on the Chatback programme about what life was like for her in Cameroon
