How to form a government...in 1974

Somerset Decides

Available for over a year

In the 1974 General Election neither the Conservative Prime Minister Ted Heath nor the Labour leader Harold Wilson won enough seats for an overall majority. It was something that hadn't happened since the 1920s, so was very much unchartered territory. One man who was at the centre of it all was Lord Armstrong of Ilminster, who was working as Ted Heath's Principal Private Secretary. He's been sharing his memories of that incredible election with Â鶹Éç Somerset's Jack Murley - beginning with Heath's attempts to start coalition talks with the Liberal leader Jeremy Thorpe.
