East Timor’s Sacred Huts

Heart and Soul

Available for over a year

East Timorese call their Uma Lulik, or sacred huts, “The centre of everything.” They are where memories and wisdom are preserved, and serve as a link between the past and the present. Many Uma Lulik were destroyed by retreating Indonesians when East Timor gained independence from Indonesia in 2002. The sacred huts which remain are part of a wider set of beliefs around lulik – or “magic.” Now the Uma Lulik are being rebuilt.
