Church Lane, Rochdale, The Deaf School

World War One At Home

Available for over a year

What help was available for wounded soldiers returning from the Great War? In Rochdale, they pioneered lip reading classes at the town鈥檚 Institute for the Deaf to help those men who had lost their hearing after being wounded in battle. The lessons were created by Irene Goldsack who was at the forefront of deaf education. The aim was to rehabilitate the men back into society. Dr Martin Atherton from the University of Lancashire, an expert in deafness, says it鈥檚 likely the classes were successful. Location: Church Lane, Rochdale OL16 1NS Image: Institute for the Deaf
