Baltimore riot son will 'try to do better'

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

A son filmed being berated by his mother during the Baltimore riots says he will "try to do better". Michael Graham was masked and carrying a rock when his mother Toya arrived at the scene of the clashes and repeatedly slapped him for taking part. 鈥淭he first thing she said was 鈥榩ut that rock down鈥,鈥 said Michael. 鈥淚 turned around like 鈥榦h, snap that鈥檚 my mother鈥 鈥 I didn鈥檛 know what to do." Toya said: "I shield Michael a lot from the street, I try to stop him from being harmed or being in danger so he understands why I reacted like I did. "Sometimes that pushes him away from me because it's like I'm stopping him from being a child, I understand that but at the same time I don't want to lose my son," she added. The protests have gone on daily since Freddie Gray died from injuries sustained in police custody. This clip is originally from 5 live Afternoon Edition on Thursday 30 April 2015.
