Sir Antony Sher: reading Shakespeare is ‘difficult’

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

Sir Antony Sher says he finds reading Shakespeare "difficult". The actor won the Critics Circle award for best Shakespearean Performance for his role playing Falstaff in last year's Royal Shakespeare Company production of Henry IV. "One of my jobs as a classical actor, as a Shakespeare actor, is that I'm going to get to understand the text so well that when I speak it, you the audience will get a sense of what I'm saying" said Sir Antony. "To start with, it is difficult for me. I wasn't university trained. So I have to spend a lot of time at the beginning translating it into ordinary English." This clip is originally from 5 live Afternoon Edition on Monday 4 May 2015.
