Nelly Jones from Middlesbrough was 20 on VE Day. "I was working on the buses at the time. Someone came on and said ‘isn't it great - the war's over’. I said ‘what?’ They said, ‘it's Victory in Europe Day!’, and I said ‘oh, great!’ That was how Nelly learnt the Germans had been defeated. “Everyone was really happy. On the night, all the neighbours were out on the street. They were singing, dancing - everybody was so glad and relieved it was all over," Nelly recalls.
