Hear from five people with very different experiences of VE Day. For Mary Williams it was a celebration that her family had survived the war without loss of life. Richard Randle had been confined to barracks in Norwich when news of the peace came through. He was release to soak up the atmosphere and dodge the drunks. Victor Dieble never made it to the party in Great Massingham – he was stuck at the airfield trapped in the control tower by a military police dog. Dalsi Burleigh was on the other side of the world in Madras where the celebrations were just as jubilant. Daphne Aston from Sheringham talks about what the peace meant for her – after growing up knowing nothing but fear.
