A Lake District farmer has called for a debate on whether tourists "should pay to enter" British national parks. James Rebanks was reacting to a report that suggests some farmers earn £8,000 a year. Rebanks said the Lake District was home to people "working like crazy all year around, doing the best they can, looking after one of the most beautiful places in Britain." "Sixteen million people come and visit, they spend £1.1 billion worth of tourism money a year and you've got the two or three hundred families sustaining it in many cases living like church mice, "he added.
