Surgeon: 'Kylie Jenner Challenge' can 'lead to gangrene'

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

A surgeon says attempting the Kylie Jenner challenge can "lead to gangrene". The challenge has become a social media phenomenon, with teenagers sucking bottles and shot glasses to emulate the Kardashian sister's plump lip look. Kaveh Shakib, a surgeon at Harley Street Maxofacial Clinic said "this is a form of self-mutilation. If it's done to the degree that's beyond repair of a normal body's response then I'm afraid it's going to lead to gangrene and long lasting damage to the lip." Earlier 19-year old Abbie Aspey told 5live that after attempting the challenge "all the top and bottom of my lips were bruised - it was like that for a week." In April, Kylie Jenner wrote on Twitter that she was "not here to try and encourage people/young girls to look like me." This clip is originally from 5live Drive on Monday 18th May 2015.
