Seven Fifa officials have been arrested on charges they received millions of US dollars in bribes. A separate criminal investigation has also been opened in connection with the awarding of the 2018 Russia and 2022 Qatar World Cups. The Fifa presidential election, in which Sepp Blatter faces Prince Ali bin al-Hussein, will still take place on Friday despite the arrests. New York Times journalist Matt Apuzzo said the charges “go back decades” and accuse Fifa members of corruptions of “all levels”.
