Stephen Nolan: How Not to Climb a Mountain

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

Climbing mountains is not something that 5 live presenter Stephen Nolan takes on every day - but that's exactly the goal he set himself on a Sunday afternoon walk in the Mourne Mountains of County Down, as part of a personal fitness drive. Hear the moment an exhausted & clearly emotional Stephen achieved his goal after nearly five hours: "I made it... I made it... I made it!" The award-winning presenter - who's tried to lose weight on previous occasions - is visibly struck by the "absolutely beautiful" view, before admitting that "I now feel like crying because I've got to walk all the way down again." He set out on his walk equipped with only a pair of trainers and wearing shorts several sizes too small, and admits he was ill-prepared for the task at hand: "I haven't brought a bottle of water, I don't have suntan lotion and I think it's going to take me two hours to get back down again" He contrasts his elation at his achievement with the feeling of having failed previous diets: "Please let this be Day One of me trying again" before concluding ruefully: "When I die just say I was a trier".
