Ioan Grillo, author of "El Narco" on Mexico's escaped drug lord

Newsday

Available for over a year

Mexico's most dangerous prisoner, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel and a man once described by the United States as the "most powerful drug trafficker in the world" has escaped. He went on the run on Sunday after using a 1.5 kilometre tunnel from a small opening in the shower area of his cell. El Chapo, or Shorty, had previously escaped from a maximum security prison in 2001 and Mexican authorities promised this would never happen again. Ioan Grillo, author of "El Narco: The Bloody Rise of the Mexican Drug Cartels" gave his reaction to the escape of the drug lord.
