Dillibe Onyeama on Nigeria's great authors

The Arts Hour

Available for over a year

Nigerian author Dillibe Onyeama speculates on why the Igbo people of Nigeria have produced so many leading writers, including the first black author, Olaudah Equiano, an African who was sold into slavery, later acquired his freedom and, in 1789, wrote an autobiography, The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano. Onyeama also ranks the Nigerian authors he believes to be greatest (Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Obi Egbuna top the bill). He has written more than twenty books, including Nigger at Eton (he is reputed to be the first black African to study at Eton College in the UK), and was speaking to Akwesi Sarpong.
