A rare defect meant that Joel Holliday's sex wasn't known for certain when he was born and he was raised as a female until he was 25. Joel said his condition means "the baby's not formed very well and the genital area is also not formed so it's very difficult to tell the gender of the baby from birth". Although he was initially raised as male, doctors advised Joel's parents that the "easier option" was to raise him as female. Joel said that before discovering he was a male after a chromosome test he felt like he had "no future" but now has a "much more positive outlook on life".
