China is staging a giant military parade in Tiananmen Square to mark 70 years since Japan's defeat in the Second World War. In his speech, president Xi Jingping pledged to reduce the Chinese army by nearly a third of a million. Many western leaders have shunned the event made up of 12,000 soldiers, 200 aircraft and some sophisticated weaponry.
