What exactly were we fighting for in World War One? On 5 January 1918, Prime Minister David Lloyd-George used a speech to the Trades Union Congress, at Caxton Hall in Westminster, to outline Britain’s war aims. The speech has been described as the most significant wartime statement from Britain on the objectives of the war. It came at a key time for Lloyd-George. With little sign of an imminent end to the war, the Prime Minister was coming under significant pressure at home and abroad. Continued support for Britain’s war effort was vital in what would turn out to be the final year of the conflict.
