Murder victim's mum: 'No deterrent' for knife carriers

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

A mother whose son was stabbed to death at a party has said that there is "no deterrent" for people who carry knives because the sentences are not long enough. Caroline Shearer lost her 17-year-old son Jay when he was attacked at a party. She has since set up a charity called 'Only Cowards Carry' which aims to change teenagers' behaviour by running 'weapon awareness' lessons in schools. Caroline believes there should be a "zero tolerance" approach to carrying knives and that policies should change to an automatic one year sentence. "If you carry a weapon or bladed item then that should be it". Knife crime has increased across England and Wales for the first time in four years, according to recent government figures. This clip is originally from 5 live Breakfast on September 24 2015.
