Surgeons in London have carried out a pioneering human embryonic stem cell operation in an ongoing trial to find a cure for blindness for many patients. The cells were implanted into the retina of a woman with age-related macular degeneration -- the most common cause of blindness in the UK. Another nine patients are to receive the treatment. Initial results from the first patient, on whether any vision has been restored, should be available by the end of the year.
