Eldridge Moores worked with Harry Hess in the 1960s at a time when he was making the discovery that far from being static, the globe beneath our feet is made up of plates that are in perpetual motion. With this discovery of plate tectonics we can now understand how earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur, and why and how mountains form.
