"This has to be a global effort"

Newsday

Available for over a year

Sea Coral around the world is bleaching - losing it's colour, and it's a sign of environmental pollution we should all take seriously. Scientists say rising sea temperatures have seen coral expelling the algae which lives in it (and provides the amazing coral colours). Without the algae the corals lose their major source of food and turn pale and are more susceptible to diseases. It is happening in Hawaii and is now spreading into the Caribbean and this process may last into the new year. This has become known as the third global coral bleaching event ever on record. Newsday spoke to Dr Jim Maragos, a coral reef biologist in Haiwaii. (Photo: Bleaching in American Samoa. Credit: XL Catlin Seaview Survey)
