The American pop singer and actress, Selena Gomez, has revealed that she underwent chemotherapy after being diagnosed with the autoimmune disease Lupus. She says the disease is now in remission. So what is lupus? Dr Susan Manzi, Director of the Lupus Centre of Excellence at The Allegheny Health Network in Pittsburgh explains what the disease is. "lupus is a chronic (no cure) autoimmune disease. Your immune system, which is supposed to be your defender becomes confused, and begins to attack itself [...] Almost all parts of the body are at risk" Asked about the symptoms, Dr Manzi explained: "Mild symptoms can be skin rashes, profound fatigues, joint pain [...] severe problems can be heart attacks and premature strokes and kidney failure". Dr Manzi said there is a lot of research going on into what causes Lupus, that it impacts women more than men, and that the disease can be genetic. This clip is from Up All Night 09 October 2015
