'Shark attack revealed I had cancer' says thankful swimmer

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

An American swimmer says he has a shark to thank for helping him discover a cancerous tumour on his kidney. Eugene Finney was swimming in the waters of Huntington Beach, California, when he was "struck on the back". He's convinced it was a shark due to sightings that day, and said he didn't realise the damage until his daughter pointed out his bloody back. But it is what followed which is more extraordinary than his lucky escape. Days later, he visited doctors after "immense" chest and back pains, and that eventually led to a cancer diagnosis. Thankfully for Eugene, he was given the all clear after surgery, and told that his cancer could have been significantly more serious if he didn't seek medical help following the incident. "If I could get him a beer I would," he said about the shark. This clip is originally from Up All Night on Sunday 11 October 2015.
