US man's two-dollar Billy the Kid photo now worth millions

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

A US man who bought a rare photograph of outlaw Billy the Kid for two dollars says Kagin's auctioneers have valued it at $5 million. Randy Guijarro bought the photo from a California junk shop in 2010, and later realised one of the faces in the photo was "very familiar". Guijarro's photo shows McCarty and his gang, the Regulators, playing "a rousing game of croquet" in New Mexico, 1878. "It caught my eye: that hat and the stance," Guijarro said. "It was just so amazing to see him leaning against a croquet stick, instead of a Winchester rifle." The only other verified picture of Billy the Kid, whose real name was Henry McCarty, sold for $2.3million in 2011. This clip is originally from Up All Night on Thursday 15 October 2015.
