Olympic Champion Cheats Death

Not by the Playbook

Available for over a year

Amy Van Dyken has spent her whole life overcoming challenges that might otherwise have stopped most people from succeeding. You don't win six Olympic gold swimming medals without pushing yourself! However, 18 months ago she was told she would never walk again after a quad bike accident left her fighting for her life and paralysed just below the waist. "It was actually so severe and so scary that the doctor did tell me to say goodbye to Tom (her husband) and there were actually doctors there who were going to take my organs," recalls Amy. In an interview with Sportshour's Sarah Mulkerrins, Amy, who coped with chronic asthma as a child, explains how she battled back from the brink of death and insists that she will walk again under her own power.
