Poverty, traditional cultural barriers and insecurity prevent many young Afghans from going to school. Dr Sakena Yacoobi is one of the people working tirelessly to rebuild her country's educational structures. Popularly known as Afghanistan's 'mother of education', she was awarded recently an international accolade: the 2015 WISE Prize for education in Doha. And she's famous for once inviting some angry members of the Taliban to share a cup of tea when they raided her school. Newsday spoke to her. (Photo: Dr. Sakena Yacoobi. Credit: Alissa Everett)
