After the Russian jet was downed on 24th November, it was only a matter of time before the Russian and Syrian governments decided to attack the Turkmen rebels. And it came on Tuesday in the form of an intense bombardment on the mountains held by rebels in Latakia, close to the Turkish border. Samir Hafez is a former President of the Syrian Turkmen Assembly and has been speaking to rebel commanders on the ground. Speaking from Turkey, he told Newsday what happened on Tuesday.
