Burundi has descended into violence since President Pierre Nkurunziza decided in April he would run for a third term. It was a move opponents said violated the constitution. He went on to win a controversial election in July. Both pro-government and opposition factions have resorted to reprisal killings. At least 240 people have been killed so far, and 200,000 people have fled to neighbouring countries. The US and the EU have placed sanctions on government officials and leaders of a failed coup plot.
