"People come to take refuge here"

Newsday

Available for over a year

Since the President of Burundi, Pierre Nkurunziza, announced he would be running for a third term in office, there has been political violence. Even after he won the elections, in which opponents said he was constitutionally barred from standing, the killings have continued. Most of the violence has been in the capital, Bujumbura. In fact, if you speak to the government they’ll say the violence is only in certain neighbourhoods and that if you go to the rest of the country, it’s peaceful. So Newsday’s Nkem Ifejika drove thirty minutes outside Bujumbura to the small fishing community of Kabezi to see what life is like there.
