Football inspires unity amid Burundi violence

Newsday

Available for over a year

Burundi, one of the poorest countries in the world, is experiencing political turmoil. Since President Pierre Nkurunziza's controversial and successful bid for a third term was announced earlier this year, bodies of members from both the governing and opposition parties are dumped on the streets with alarming frequency. One thing which may bring the sides together is football. The president is even well known for playing regularly. Nkem Ifejika went to a match in Bujumbura to see whether the beautiful game can escape politics. (Photo: A football match in Bujumbura, the capital of Burundi. Credit: Huong Ly Â鶹Éç)
