Should we eat Dartmoor's ponies?

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

A Devonshire farmer has suggested that eating Dartmoor ponies could help their long-term survival. Charlotte Faulkner from the Dartmoor Hill Pony Association said "only a certain number of ponies" are allowed on the moor at one time, and despite re-homing hundreds of foals each year, up to 300 are slaughtered "for nothing". She said if a food market were introduced the ponies "would have a value" and money could be raised to help reduce breeding. "We're not asking people to eat hundreds, it's just a very small part of a bigger management puzzle for the ponies on the moor". Opponents of the idea say stallions should be removed from the moor which would control pony numbers. This clip is originally from 5 live Breakfast on December 8 2015.
