Cuba’s plans to get tough on smoking

Health Check

Available for over a year

Cubans love tobacco but it’s killing them. A third of Cuban men smoke and even though Fidel Castro gave up years ago to set an example, it’s a habit that’s proving hard to quit. There are rules about smoking in public places, but they’re not always enforced. Coordinator of the National Anti-Smoking Programme, Dr Elba Lorenzo Vasquez tells Claudia Hammond that the anti-smoking regulations will be turned into law, backed up by big fines.
