Trekking across the world's largest sand desert

Newsday

Available for over a year

A British explorer Mark Evans and his two Omani colleagues have started a 50-day walking expedition that will take them across the world's largest sand desert, the Empty Quarter, in the southern Arabian peninsula. The three men will retrace the 1,300-kilometre route taken by a British civil servant, Bertram Thomas, in 1930, from southern Oman, through Saudi Arabia, to Qatar. Journalist Marcus George was in Salalah to see them off: ( Mark Evans and his colleagues in the Omani desert. Credit: Sim Davis )
